Wearside was today visited by a host of angels – of the knitted variety!

Hundreds of knitted angels were left at parks, schools, hospitals and shops across Sunderland as free gifts this morning, as part of an initiative by various churches to spread the true meaning of Christmas.

The project has seen both adults and children involved, from seasoned knitters to beginners.

Anyone finding an angel is encouraged to take it home as a keepsake.

A spokesman for the initiative said: “It has been truly humbling the amount of people who have backed the angels.

“The reason for wanting to take part in the project was to show, like that first Christmas long ago, that God’s love can and still comes down to earth”.

“We hope that it will bring a smile and heartfelt warmth this Christmas.”
