It is being set up by Peterlee Community Concern, and there are hopes plenty of children in the town and the surrounding areas will show interest in joining.

Irene Mortimer, secretary of Peterlee Community Concern, said: “We think the children in the community would benefit from having a knitting club available, so we’re trying to start one up.

“We have focused mainly on children, because I’m sure there are lots of youngsters who would like to knit.

“We hear about it all the time.

“Various children have told us they wish they could knit, but because in a lot of families there are now two generations who were never taught how to, their parents are not able to help them out.

“They also don’t teach knitting at school any more.

“We thought we would give this a try, and we’re confident it will work out.

“Initially, it will just be a trial period of four weeks, and we’ll see how strong the interest is during that time and then decide whether to make it a full-time club.

“Two women from the group are planning to teach the children, and we’re really hoping we’ll get good interest in it.”

Meanwhile, Peterlee Memorial Methodist Church is offering a month’s free rent for any clubs looking for new premises.
