Appeal after Washington man dies in fatal road accident

POLICE are appealing witnesses after a 77-year-old man was killed in a road accident.

The incident happened on Picktree Lane, Chester-le-Street, just before the junction with the A1(M) at 12noon yesterday.

The male driver of the Peugeot 308 car was heading towards the junction with the motorway when for reasons unknown, he has drifted off the main carriageway and collided with a lamppost and a parked car.

The driver, from Washington, was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
