Alan Shearer reveals how 'brilliant' Sunderland taught champions Leicester a lesson

The Black Cats were well worth a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light that brought them within striking distance of the Foxes at the bottom of the table.

Shearer was particularly scathing of Leicester, saying that they are in a relegation scrap - and need to learn from Sunderland's fighting spirit.

"The biggest mistake they (Leicester) could make now is believing they are not in a relegation scrap, because they are," he wrote in The Sun.

"On Saturday, Sunderland gave them a lesson in what you have to do in that position — work hard and fight.

"That is something they themselves were not doing earlier this season but are now. Leicester rocked up to the Stadium of Light thinking ‘We are the champions and this won’t be a problem’.

"That is a big error for any team in this Premier League."

But while Shearer was critical of Leicester, he was fulsome in his praise of the Black Cats.

“Sunderland were absolutely brilliant, they deserved to win,” said Shearer on Match of the Day.

“They were hungrier than Leicester, they won more 50-50’s, they worked harder and they thoroughly deserved their three points.”

Shearer wasn't the only one impressed with Sunderland, with his former Blackburn strike partner Chris Sutton admitting he had changed his opinion on David Moyes' men.

“To be honest, I had written them off,” said the other half of the famed SAS partnership.

“I thought they were going to get relegated a month ago but David Moyes has got his team playing, and they have got belief now.

“Anichebe has been sensational the last couple of weeks and Defoe is a goalscorer.”
