Alan Beck took over the role last month and works alongside Margaret Daniel to ensure Holy Trinity Church in South Hetton runs smoothly.

The church is in need of a new roof, and he is hoping to give the appeal a boost so the work can be carried out to make the 175-year-old building watertight and fit for use in the future.

Around £250 is in the pot so far, but he hopes donations will be added through sponsorship for a 15,000ft skydive he plans to do at Shotton Airfield on Thursday, September 17.

The church has also been landed with another £600 bill after four windows were smashed by vandals in recent weeks.

Alan, 61, who lives in the village with wife Jackie, 60, and is a driver on Stagecoach’s 20 route from Fawcett Street to Pennywell, said: “I’m not very fond of heights, and I’m either extremely brave or extremely stupid, but everybody in the church and my family is backing me.

“The church is 175 years old and it needs a new roof after all that time.

“It’s falling to bits and it needs some money spent on it.”
