The flights will commence on May 31, and fares start at £78 one way or £139 return.

Jochen Schnadt, bmi's chief commercial officer said: “We’re excited to be adding this route into our network and with it Stavanger as our latest addition to our growing network of key business locations.

"Stavanger has a varied appeal; the city is a hub for the oil and gas industry, as well as being a former Capital of Culture with great gourmet credentials.

"Our new branded fares, including our new Executive product, will be a perfect fit for this new market, offering both business and leisure customers the right product and flexibility choice when travelling between Newcastle and Stavanger.”

For tourists, Stavanger boasts original dockside warehouses and pretty 18th-century streets. The old city has a lovely collection of wooden buildings and is airy and light.

The recent oil boom has meant great shopping, sophisticated hotels and lots of fine dining options.

Most nights, especially in summer, the city's waterfront comes alive, in the best tradition of port cities.

Leon McQuaid, aviation development manager director at Newcastle International Airport, said: “We are delighted that bmi regional will be operating this new Stavanger service.

"Norway is an important business and trade link for the North East, as well as being a popular destination for leisure travellers.

"As well as anticipating further growth in outbound tourism, we also expect this service to deliver a significant increase of inbound traffic to the region.”

Leif Anker Lorentzen, director of Sola Airport in Stavanger, said: “It's always nice to introduce routes that will drive additional business and leisure travellers into the region."
