'Agitated' man helped to safety after being spotted on pier

Emergency teams went to the aid of man after concern was raised for his welfare on Seaham's North Pier.

Seaham and Hartlepool Coastguard Rescue Teams were called out shortly before 7pm yesterday when reports were received of an "agitated" man on the pier.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "Seaham arrived on scene and liaised with police officers.

"The male was engaging with officers further down the pier.

"After a short while the male decided to come off the pier and into the care of police we were stood down on route to Seaham."
