Adam Johnson: Seven games the ex-Sunderland winger played a key role in after arrest

In total, shamed Johnson made 14 starts and 14 sub appearances.

The 28-year-old is facing jail after being found guilty of one charge of sexual activity with a child by a jury at Bradford Crown Court.

He was found not guilty of another charge, and had earlier pleaded guilty to two other offences.

2014-15 Premier League campaign:

Everton v Sunderland: May 9, 2015:

With Premier League survival in the balance, Dick Advocaat took his Sunderland side to Goodison Park and returned with a 2-0 win and three vital points.

Johnson, who started on the bench, was introduced in the 74th minute and he produced a lively performance.

He had a hand in the crucial second goal, playing in Jermain Defoe who sealed the win in the 85th minute.

A huge Sunderland win on the club’s way to securing their top flight status.

Result: 2-0 win. Three points gained.

Arsenal v Sunderland: May 20, 2015:

Johnson was handed a start in one of the club’s biggest ever Premier League games, with the players knowing a point would see Sunderland safe.

And after 90 hard-fought minutes, Advocaat’s dogged Black Cats side got the point they needed.

Johnson played 75 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, working hard throughout and creating a golden chance that Steven Fletcher couldn’t take.

It didn’t matter in the end though as Sunderland saw the game out to secure survival.

Result: 0-0 draw that saw Sunderland safe. Point gained.

2015-16 Premier League campaign:

Sunderland v Newcastle United: October 25, 2015:

Adam Johnson, known as the Magpie Slayer, had a strong track record in derby day wins over Newcastle United, scoring four goals in six games.

And he was on the scoresheet in the 3-0 victory at the Stadium of Light back in October.

Newcastle had battered Sunderland in the opening stages but when Fabricio Coloccini brought down Fletcher for a penalty, Coloccini was red-carded and Johnson scored on the stroke of half-time.

It proved a decisive moment, with Sunderland wrapping up the win in the second half thanks to Billy Jones and Fletcher.

Result: 3-0 win. Three points gained.

Sunderland v Stoke City : November 28, 2015:

With the game hanging in the balance, Sam Allardyce turned to his bench in a bid to snatch a crucial win.

It took Sunderland until the 82nd minute to break down a stubborn Stoke defence though, Patrick van Aanholt scoring from a disguised free-kick routine.

Sub Johnson, fouled for the free-kick, rolled the ball to the Dutch defender who smashed the ball home from 20-yards.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes accused Johnson of going to ground too easily in winning the free-kick.

Duncan Watmore added a second two minutes later to seal the with. Johnson’s introduction proved decisive.

Result 2-0 win: Three points gained.

Sunderland v Aston Villa: January 2, 2016:

It may have been the first game of the calendar year but the visit of Aston Villa was already a crunch relegation match.

And Sunderland came up trumps with a 3-1 win thanks to a Jermain Defoe brace.

Johnson, who played behind Defoe in an attacking midfield role, assisted the 33-year-old for the winning goal.

A big win for the Black Cats.

Swansea City v Sunderland: January 13, 2016:

Johnson was again named in the starting line-up against another side involved in the relegation scrap.

Johnson missed a great chance just after Defoe had put Sunderland 1-0 up, blasting his shot well wide.

But he produced a lovely ball to play in van Aanholt to make it 2-2 and impressed second half as Sunderland went on to win thanks to Defoe’s hat-trick.

Result 4-2 win: Three points gained.

Liverpool v Sunderland: February 6, 2016:

Sunderland were staring down the barrel of another defeat, with Liverpool 2-0 up at Anfield.

With less than 10 minutes remaining and with thousands of fans having walked out of the ground in protest at rising ticket prices sub Johnson helped get Sunderland back in the game.

Wahbi Khazri was fouled and Johnson stepped up to curl a free-kick into the corner of the net underneath the despairing glove of Simon Mignolet.

It was a crucial moment, the momentum firmly with Sunderland as Defoe fired home an 88th minute equaliser to snatch a point. This was Johnson’s last Sunderland game.

Result: 2-2. Point gained.
