Johnson, of Castle Eden, was convicted of a serious charge of sexual activity with an underage fan on March 2, following a trial by jury at the same court.

Prior to the trial, the 28-year-old, who played for Sunderland, Manchester City and Middlesbrough, admitted charges of kissing and grooming the same girl, who was 15 at the time of the offences.

Today, he will appear before Judge Jonathan Rose, who presided over the three-week trial, for sentence. The case is listed for 10.30am.

Releasing him on bail, the judge added: "I am giving bail so you can say goodbye to your baby daughter, and anticipate a prison sentence that means you will not see her for some time.”
