A MOTORCYCLIST has been taken to hospital after a smash closed the northbound carriageway of the A19.

Durham Police are appealing for the driver of a Black 4x4 to come forward after an incident, which happened at 2pm today.

Both lanes of the northbound carriageway of the A19, near the Hyundai garage at Peterlee, were closed. They are now open, but there are delays in the area.

Police said the incident happened when the 4x4, make and model unknown, drove up the northbound entry slip road and forced its way onto the carriageway, causing the driver of a motorcycle to collide into the back of a Renault Clio.

The motorcycle rider, a 20-year -ld male, has been taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening at this time.

PC Jack Hamilton, from Seaham Roads Policing Unit, said: “We would urge the driver of this vehicle to come forward and speak to the police.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or thinks they may have seen the 4 x 4 driving away from the scene.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
