“Shrove Tuesday was traditionally the time to use up eggs and fats before fasting for Lent,” said photographic archivist Susan Swinney.

“Pancakes were the perfect way of cooking up these ingredients and generations of Wearsiders have had great fun celebrating Pancake Day.”

Among the pictures featured is a sponsored pancake toss at Church High School in 1992, and a charity pancake race at Washington in the same year.

“The word Shrove is derived from Shrive, which means to obtain absolution for sins – hence Christians were ‘shriven’ before the start of Lent,” said Susan.

“Ultimately, however, Pancake Day has become a day of fun - as our photos here show.”
