But others weren't so sure. Here's a selection - including one from a Newcastle fan.

Tim Harding: "I remember when we were relegated many years ago 3rd division against Gillingham and the Toon fans turned up in their droves. So a little payback. If it's any consolation ,shame we won't get 6 points of them next season!"

Dan Ward: "Newcastle fans whinging about this obviously forgot about their 'Let's All Laugh At Sunderland' comics and turning up to support Gillingham at Roker. Well, we didn't. Hard lines."

Kris Marshall: "Bit cringeworthy if you ask me. SAFC fans should be concentrating on our game with Watford not the Mags game."

Peta Fox: "Going a wee bit overboard are we? Why can't we be humble with our win and just get on with the rest of our lives."

Anthony Blacker: "Just hope that doesn't come back to bite us next season."

Clair Burnett Shields: "I'm married to a Mag (I know! I know!) And he was told in no uncertain terms you have mocked us before and you would be doing it again if you were in our position so zip it and take it as banter!"

Shaun Brunton: "We'd be doing something similar if the shoe was on the other foot. The only grace to be salvaged at times like this is by shutting your mouth and taking it on the chin."
