THERE are hopes that a major retailer could provide a cornerstone for a multi-million pound revamp of a run-down gateway to Durham City

Details of the redevelopment of North Road have been revealed as Durham County Council’s cabinet prepare to discuss the £6.2million proposal.

Hopper House would be demolished, making way for a new bus station and the A690 roundabout would be turned into a crossroads junction.

While it already owns some of the buildings earmarked for development, the county council is in talks with Age Concern and Metcalfe House which fall within the project zone.

There would be no changes to the Grade II listed methodist church but an outdoor area known as North Place will be created as part of a revitalised North Road. A council spokesman said: “This work enables the existing bus station site to be used for a key retailer to encourage more shoppers and further 200,000sq ft of adjacent office and shop space.” A public consultation meeting will be held at the Blockbuster store in North Road from noon to 6pm on May 1 and 2.
