£2,500 bill for church

Have your say

A CHURCH has faces a £2,500 repair bill after thieves stole £200 worth of lead.

The crooks struck at Grade II listed St Mary’s church, in West Rainton, a fortnight ago, stripping the lead from the roof of the building’s north and south sides.

It is believed the repair bill will come to about £,7,500, of which just £5,000 will be covered by insurance.

“It makes me feel quite sick,” said church warden Herbert Willis.

“People are working hard to raise this money and then this happens.

“It breaks your heart.”

And they are appealing to local people to help pay for the repairs.
