PLANS for a multimillion-pound extension to the Bridges are now just one step away from becoming a reality.
City planners gave their thumbs up to the new £15million Primark store which will be housed in the extension on High Street West – saying it will be recommended for approval.
At 60,000sq ft, the three-storey store will be double the size of the present Primark store in Fawcett Street.
Shopping centre owner Land Securities must still thrash out final details and conditions with council chiefs before planning permission is officially granted – with a target date of January 25.
Andy Bradley, centre director for the Bridges, said: “It is really exciting that we are just one step away from being granted full planning permission for our £15million expansion. If we are successful it would be a great way to start 2011.”
Jonathan Buckle, portfolio manager for the Bridges, added: “We are really keen to strengthen the centre’s reputation as one of the best shopping and fashion destinations in the North East for our 21million customers who visit each year.
“Therefore, we need to continually improve the retail mix and shopping environment within the Bridges.
“To achieve this we have been working hand in hand with Sunderland City Council to evolve our offer by developing plans which will allow us to bring Primark into the centre.
“This will ultimately help us make Sunderland a more attractive destination to our customers.”
