TWELVE jobs are to be created after plans for a new convenience store in Southwick were approved by councillors.
The city council’s licensing sub-committee approved a licensing application by 3F Leisure Ltd, which plans to open a new Londis store in the ground floor of the former Sun Inn.
Two residents had objected to the plans, but businessman Ash Vedhara said he had been confident the safeguards the company had in place to deter problems would be enough to persuade councillors to give the application the thumbs-up.
“I thought it would probably happen – we intend to tick all the right boxes and run a professional shop,” he said.
“I have been verbally informed it was passed. I am just waiting for it to be confirmed in writing and that is when we can start to get the building ready.
“Now it is just matter of getting the plans in place.”
The objections had put the plan back several weeks, he said.
“We originally thought we would open before Easter but then we got the objections.
“The quickest it could be is about six weeks if we can push it. I was hoping for the second May bank holiday.
“We need to order the refrigerators and shelving and then start looking for the 12 members of staff.
“I want to hire people who live in the area.”
