The group has sold more than 30million albums worldwide, but it is not often a set includes a flying display and fireworks.

“People coming down can expect all the hits and more,” said frontman Graham Gouldman. “Plus favourite album tracks and a few surprises.”

The gig starts at 7pm with the RAF band, followed by a 30-minute acoustic set featuring Graham, after which he will be joined by the rest of 10cc.

The band are best known for 70s hits Not in Love, Dreadlock Holiday and Donna, but Graham says they never tire of playing the classics.

“We don’t have our favourites, they’re all our babies,” he said. “We never getting bored of playing the hits.

“The way I see it is that we are listening to it through the ears of the audience and to them it is fresh.

“I think if we ever lost that enthusiasm that would be the time to stop.

“A very important component of a gig is to get excited and a little bit nervous before you go on stage.”

The event officially launches the largest free two-day airshow in Europe, which takes place over the weekend.

Graham says the band are looking forward to returning to Wearside.

“It’s going to be a great show,” he said.

“We were last in Sunderland about four years ago so it’s great to come back. It always has a good audience.”

Councillor John Kelly, who is Sunderland City Council’s cabinet member for culture, said: “Friday evening has now become a big part of the weekend, and previous launch nights have been very popular.

“This is a real coup to get 10cc, and their songs and hits are going to please a lot of people.”

He added: “I’m certain this event is going to be really good night and a great start to the airshow itself on Saturday and Sunday.”
