HOUSEHOLDERS can share a prize fund of £10,000 by recycling more of their waste.
Five councils, including Sunderland, are encouraging residents to recycle more aerosols, glass jars and cartons.
As part of the North East Recycling Awards Campaign, each month one person in each council area will win a prize to the value of £250.
The scheme runs until the end of September.
Councillor James Blackburn, cabinet member for environment, waste and recycling, said: “We have recently made it easier to recycle by increasing the range of materials residents can put in the kerbside blue bin to glass, magazines, card, cans and metal foils, plastic bottles and food packaging and drinks cartons alongside paper in the caddy.
“The incentives scheme will help us further raise the profile of recycling in the city, get more residents involved and target specific items that people often overlook when they recycle. It will help divert more waste from ending up in landfill sites.”
