STARS of a hit comedy at the Sunderland Empire are urging Wearside Women to enter this year’s Race for Life.
The Naked Truth, which features Michelle Heaton, formerly of Liberty X, and Maureen Nolan, of the Nolans, has been wowing audiences at the theatre since Monday night.
Following the experiences of five women, the play centres on their struggle to master pole dancing in aid of a cancer charity.
The production also stars soap favourites Claire King, who played evil Kim Tate and Hollyoaks’ Julie Buckfield.
North East-born Michelle spoke of her own experiences of the illness and called on women to take part in the 5k race, which takes place at Herrington Country Park on Saturday, May 21, and Sunderland, May 22.
Michelle’s grandmother twice battled cancer.
She said: “It is incredibly important to take part in Race for Life because it raises a huge amount of money for the life-saving work Cancer Research UK does and it is something we can all be part of.
“We can all do our bit, so please join the girls in Sunderland – and sign up for Race for Life now.”
Organisers are hoping 7,500 women will enter and meet a fund-raising target of £477,000, an improvement on 2010, when 4,400 took part and raised £214,000.
You can also take part in the 10k race, without paying an additional entry fee.
Holly Howey, event manager for Race for Life Sunderland, said: “We are very grateful to the cast of The Naked Truth for their support.
“The play is great fun, poignant and uplifting – just like Race for Life.
“This year Cancer Research UK needs more women than ever before to take part in Race for Life events across the North East.
“Whatever their motivation, those taking part are united by a spirit of sisterhood and the heartfelt determination to beat cancer.”
