THE cream of British theatre is heading to Durham.

Gala Theatre is to screen a series of live performances from London’s National Theatre (NT) from this month.

The venue is one of the biggest in the region to be taking part in the NT Live project, which sees theatres and cinemas broadcasting its productions in real time.

The season starts on January 17, with Oscar-nominee John Lithgow – star of 3rd Rock from the Sun, Shrek and Dexter – taking the title role in Arthur Wing Pinero’s Victorian farce The Magistrate.

Gala operations manager Robin Byers said: “It’s going to give Gala audiences the chance to see the work of this most ambitious of theatres without having to leave Durham.

“Every production is filmed in high definition, using multiple cameras, and is broadcast in real time so it really is the very best in quality theatre in every sense.”

The season continues in March, with Alan Bennett’s People. To book, visit the box office, call 332 4041 or online at
