FILM buffs landed at a Wearside park to enjoy movie magic under the stars at an American-style drive-in.

Cars filed into Herrington Country Park as fans gathered to enjoy the beauty spot’s first drive-in movie – the 1980s classic Top Gun.

Hundreds of visitors were able to park up and watch the hit film, starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer, on a giant screen.

To add to the movie night theme, there were on-site refreshments including popcorn and other cinema favourites.

Coun John Kelly, Sunderland City Council cabinet member for culture, said: “Last summer we had an open-air showing of Grease on a giant screen at Herrington as part of the Sunderland Festival.

“That was hugely popular so this time we decided to go the whole hog and have a drive-in movie.”

The organisers predicted the event would be hugely popular and were not disappointed.

To listen to the film, drivers had to tune in their car radio into the on-site radio frequency, which was provided on arrival.

Cars were given designated spots, and there was a specific area for 4x4s and larger vehicles to make sure everyone could see the film.
