POPCORN and pirouettes are on the bill at Empire Cinema.
The Sunniside branch will screen a live performance of Swan Lake at The Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.
The performance, at 8pm on Tuesday, follows on from past screenings of classic ballets La Fille Mal Gardée and Romeo and Juliet at the cinema.
Jon Nutton, marketing director of Empire Cinemas, said: “It’s a great opportunity to be able to bring an entire season of The Royal Opera House performances to our customers.
“The Live Cinema Season features some incredible shows and beauty and elegance of Swan Lake is the perfect way to kick it off.
“Here at Empire Cinemas we’re always looking for new ways to entertain wide and varied audiences across the UK – the Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season offers something for everyone – it’s definitely one not to be missed.”
Set to Tchaikovsky’s famous score, Swan Lake tells the now famous love story of Prince Siegfried and the Swan Queen Odette.
When the Prince is told he has come of age to marry and his mother will be choosing his wife, he escapes to the lake to gather his thoughts.
He is then distracted by a beautiful swan, Odette who has been turned from a human into a swan by an evil sorcerer Von Rothbart.
The only way to break this spell is if a man, true of heart, declares his love for her.
