Late summer is a good time to go walking and Sunderland Walking Club offers a programme of walks by coach from Sunderland on weekends, which opens up the beautiful parts of our countryside to walkers from the city.

Walking on the fells and in the countryside has always been popular for people in the region, we are spoilt with good walking areas all around us.

Many areas get quite busy, but the advantage of going out with a walking club which has experienced leaders can take you to some beautiful and rarely visited spots.

“We live in a lovely part of the country with access to good walking routes all around us,” said Peter Walton, chairman of Sunderland Walking Club.

It is so easy to jump into the car and find a walking area within an hour or so of Sunderland, but the advantage of going by coach with a group is that we can do linear walks where the bus drops us off at one point and we all meet up at the same destination for some refreshment before we head home.

Our team of walks leaders are experienced in walking many areas of the North East that you may not find by car.

Many of our members have joined not knowing anyone, but that common interest in the outdoors soon creates conversation and a few laughs. Some members have said that they feel more confident walking with a group and indeed a leader who is experienced.

Sunderland has had a popular walking club for over sixty years. It offers three walks of different lengths on most occasions, and you can make your choice on the bus.

There are coach pickup points throughout Sunderland and the cost is £10. Bring a packed lunch, something to drink, and make sure you have suitable clothing.

The club currently runs three weekends a year in the Lake District and one in the Scottish Highlands and plans to revisit some overseas walking areas next year.

In the autumn it will be running a map reading evening for members and have a couple of Christmas walks with meal events already lined up.

The programme is good, with walking also on a Tuesday and Wednesday. The next coach walk is to West Burton in Wensleydale on Saturday, September 5. To book telephone Pauline Wheldon on 07746 7888 02. To see the full programme of walks and weekends away visit The club is also on Facebook.

New members are always welcome with an annual membership charge of £5. This is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air, and see parts of our beautiful countryside.
