At this time of year, Italian food can make for a tasty alternative to traditional turkey and all the trimmings.

And it doesn’t get much better than authentic Italian food cooked by a former member of the Buckingham Palace team. Chef and owner of Little Italy, Robert Steel has cooked for Her Majesty the Queen and worked under renowned restaurateurs.

Now you can enjoy his culinary delights at the recently expanded Little Italy, which he opened with brother Charles, in Washington’s Galleries shopping centre, in March.

Just six months into the new venture, the siblings had to expand the business to accommodate customer demand. Chef Robert said: “When we opened we could only seat 17 people and now there’s 38 seats.

“We keep things simple and do authentic Italian food, which there is not a lot of around here. Our brand and concept is unique,” said Robert, 49.

After leaving catering school, Robert worked as an apprentice at the prestigious Michelin-starred Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel, in the Lake District. Starting as a pot washer, he worked under the late Chef Francis Coulson, who managed to develop Robert’s passion for cooking.

After four years, he headed out to sea aboard Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2.

Within six years, Robert was given the title of Chef de Cuisine. I t was during his travels that he visited Venice in Italy and this was the inspiration behind the business that the duo plan to expand further next year. “We hope to be opening Little Italy 2 in May next year, but for now we are keen to make the most of Christmas,” said Robert, who has added a festive panini to the menu.

The Christmas Turkey special consists of sage and onion stuffing, fried sweet potatoes and roasted peppers, drizzled with a turkey gravy and served with a fresh, cranberry compote.
