A HOLLYWOOD workout craze is set to sweep Sunderland into a fitness frenzy.

Madonna and Kelly Osbourne have been won over by Barre Training – and now it has arrived in the North East.

MyBody Studios in East Boldon is one of the first to set up classes for the work-out which aims to tone, lengthen and define the body of even the most hardened gym bunny.

The regime combines elements of pilates, yoga, ballet and resistance training and is performed on a mat and at a ballet barre while the technique utilises the body’s own resistance with weights, bands and small balls.

Emma Newham, 41, creator of the BarreConcept classes, did ballet as a youngster and is delighted to be able to combine her old dance training with the alignment of yoga and the precision of pilates.

Emma, of East Boldon, said: “Yoga can often lack the core strength of pilates whereas pilates is not as good as yoga for stretching and flexibility training.

“This method combines the best of both worlds and goes even further with the ballet element. It’s all done to up-beat music though which I think helps people keep going.”

The low-impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, while protecting the joints and is designed to reshape the body and improve posture, flexibility, stamina and core strength.

Emma said: “Now we are going to offer a teacher training course so others can teach BarreConcept and we are getting a big response. Anything that’s big in America is going to filter down in the UK.”

BarreConcept is also suitable for everybody as various adaptations are given throughout the class to suit the abilities of all students.

Stretches are performed after each strength session of the class to ensure the muscles are r-lengthened to create a body that is strong without the added bulk of other regimes.

Emma said: “It is a hardcore workout which is why it gets results and is so popular. I tried it on some of my instructors at the studio and they were all aching for a few days afterwards but they loved the challenge of it. It has certainly started to change my body.”

The next taster session for BarreConcept is on Sunday May 15. Call or book online at
