Your Roker Park memories were roar-some

No ground like it when it was packed and in full Roker Roar mode, said Stan Carr.

We’re talking, of course, of Roker Park and the comments you made about the old place when you reacted to a photograph which we posted on social media.

It showed the bulldozers moving in and taking down the stands. It had quite an impact with more than 20,000 of you taking a look and for many, it was a poignant reminder of a ground you loved.

Paul Wallis commented: “That’s my turnstile. Im welling up.”

Ian Wainwright told us: “Great memories, I miss it so much, few beers and a pie, then the game.”

Barry Marshall reminisced: “My favourite end. In its heyday, under floodlights and choca, it was a magical place. “

And Ronnie Quinn chipped in, saying: “Still expect to see it every time I look down the side streets from Fulwell Road.”

Thanks also to Brenda Robinson who said: “Great memories. My dad took me 56/57 season.”

She added: “Loved the Roker End right up the top .Then went in the Clock Stand when they took the top off the Roker End. The Stadium is great but it hasn’t got the same feeling.”

Thank you to everyone who liked the social media post and there were plenty of you.

They included Mark Beavis, Joe Davison, Allan Hudson, Ross Hall, Frank Duigenan, Toshak Akita, Ben Dykes, John Crow and Iain Swann.

Others to like the post included Gayle Ridley, John Down, Paul Calvert, Ed Kay, Glenys Armstrong and Shaun Kamara.

But some of you admitted to being sad at the ground’s demise, such as Mal Patterson, Stephen John Fenwick, Ethan Thoburn, Alex Naylor Thubron, Scott Brown, Mark Sparky Day, and Paul Davis.
