WEARSIDE Echoes readers are invited to take a step back in time – and help solve the riddles behind this collection of vintage mystery snaps.
Mowbray Park cannon, a galleon ship model maker and a gas-fueled bus are among the photographs featured.
A snowy Winter Gardens, the demolition of Holey Rock, a Greek destroyer and Grindon Hall Hospital are included too.
“This is the latest batch I’ve scanned from our old glass plates, most of which haven’t seen the light of day for years,” said archivist Susan Swinney.
“Sadly, as usual, only a few have any relevant details attached.
“If anyone can help with names, dates or places I’d like to add the details to our archive.”
Among today’s collection is a photo of mystery children trying on gas masks at Commercial Road School in 1938 - which needs names to be put to faces.
Also featured are shots of Grindon Hall Hospital, Greenwells Dock and Sunderland Winter Gardens – which all need dates.
One of the few photos which needs little extra explanation is the demolition of Holey Rock in 1936 – as the outcrop had to be removed after it became dangerous.
“I would guess that most of the street scenes were taken during the 1930s or 1940s, but I’d very much like to find out exact dates for them,” said Susan.
“I’d also like to put a name to the mystery galleon model maker, who seems to be doing a marvellous job. I’m sure someone, somewhere, knows who he is.”
