As Wearside prepares to welcome the New Year with a festive knees-up we today focus on parties of the past.
“The Christmas season has always been a time for letting your hair down - as our old photos show,” said Echo archivist Susan Swinney.
“Indeed, the Jolly Girls Christmas Party in 1982 looks as if it was a right hoot, as does the Houghton Age Concern bash in the same year.”
Other parties featured today include one hosted by Sunderland’s Accident Hospital in 1974 - with a visit by Santa as one of the highlights.
A 1990 festive coffee morning for Castletown residents is included too, as is a party for pensioners hosted by McDonalds in the same year.
“The people of Sunderland certainly know how to celebrate in style, as these photos show. I hope the snaps bring back happy memories,” said Susan.
