Even though we are cheering on our national side, local football fans are looking forward to supporting the Black Cats on their travels far and wide next season.
Sunderland’s first game of the season is at home to Charlton Athletic in August.
So for this week’s nostalgia trip down memory lane, we thought we would take a look at SAFC’s loyal supporters over the years at home and away, and try to match up some of the games being played in the coming August with those from the past.
As you can see from the photographs here we have chosen ones that show a wide range of emotions, from the jubilant to the dejected – normal football fans’ feelings,
What about the fantastic photograph we have from 1973 – no burger and chips for these fans as they wait for Roker Park to open.
And the image of the fans streaming over Wearmouth Bridge – not a football shirt in sight.
What are your memories of being a Sunderland supporter from the pictures we have featured here, let us know.
