WEARSIDE’s jobless found a sympathetic listener during a Royal visit in 1972.
“Prince Phillip got so involved with the problems of men at the town’s Employment Exchange that he fell well behind schedule,” reported the Echo.
“Most of the people he chatted to agreed that he could probably do more to solve unemployment than any other body or organisation.”
The sun shone down on the Duke of Edinburgh as he carried out a whistle-stop tour of Sunderland and Washington on May 11.
“I think he marvellous,” said one woman. “He’s the type of man that appeals to all women, young and old, and he’s a man’s man too.”
