A MUCH-LOVED Sunderland department store shut its doors for the final time in 1972 – after more than 140 years of trading.

Blackett and Son, founded by draper William Blackett in 1826, closed on July 29 with the loss of 150 jobs.

The store had been taken over by the Hide Group, a subsidiary of English Calico, in 1963 and managing director Mr H.L.L.

Leach told the Echo: “The decision has been taken with regard to the trading potential in Sunderland. Sunderland has three other similar department stores.

“Our staff enjoy a high reputation for training, and I hope that many will find suitable employment elsewhere.”
