STAFF and students at Monkwearmouth College of Further Education cooked up a storm in July 1981 – producing a three-tier wedding cake.

The magnificent cake, complete with Royal crests, was originally offered to the Royal couple as a present – but Prince Charles and Lady Diana asked if it could be given to local charities instead.

“Buckingham Palace has written to the college, thanking them for their kind gesture, but explaining that the wedding cake for the big day has already been ordered,” reported the Echo.
