When it came to wondering what to do with the children during the long summer holidays, local playschemes often provided the answer.
Playschemes were held in various schools and community centres in the area including Farringdon, Pallion, Redby and Easington.
The activities they put on included table tennis, five-a-side football tournaments indoor games and swimming lessons.
In 1978, for the fifth year running, Pallion School was turned into a play centre for children aged from five to 14.
The scheme was run by voluntary workers Rita Thompson and Sylvia Sommerville.
Yearly playschemes were also organised by Northumbria Police Community Involvement Team. One of the most popular activities organised by the team was the disco which was arranged by volunteer cadets.
Were you one of the many young people who attended the various playschemes during these years or maybe you were one of the voluntary workers?
