MYSTERY surrounds the discovery of a box of ship photos. The wooden box of glass plate images, marked with the name Blue Peter, was unearthed in the Echo archives recently.
“We know Blue Peter was the Echo’s shipping correspondent for many years, but we have no idea which ships these are,” said photographic archivist Susan Swinney.
“I have to presume they all have some kind of link to Sunderland, otherwise Blue Peter wouldn’t have been interested in them, but I’ve no idea what their names are.”
Among the treasure trove of mystery photos are sailing ships, steam ships and paddle ships – some, but not all, are pictured with grand buildings behind them.
“I would very much like to put names to the photos,” said Susan. “Sunderland has a marvellous history of shipbuilding, and it is important to keep that heritage alive.
“I just hope that someone, somewhere, will be able to shed light on this mystery. The box was an amazing find – but it would be a shame not to solve the name puzzle.”
