Premier organist to perform in Sunderland

ONE of the countries’ premier entertainment organists will be treating Wearsiders to an afternoon of music.

Chris Powell will be playing the The Mighty Sunderland Compton Theatre Organ, at a performance in Rhyope Community Centre on May 6.

The organ was built in 1932 and belongs to the Sunderland Theatre Organ Preservation Society.

Over the years it fell into disuse, so a society was formed in 1975 to look after the organ and get it into playing condition again.

Chris, from Manchester, has become known internationally for his electronic and theatre organ music.

His love of music started at a young age, with piano and organ studies.

Chris has played at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, as well as other electronic and pipe organ venues.

The performance will be at 2.30pm with doors opening at 2pm.

Entrance is £4 and includes tea and coffee.
