CHEERFUL Peter Gibson has another reason to smile after he was recognised for his devoted work at a Wearside museum.
Some of the North East’s most dedicated staff and volunteers have been rewarded at the annual Renaissance North East Museum Volunteer Awards 2011.
Among the winners was Peter, a member of staff at Sunderland’s Monkwearmouth Station Museum, who won the Contribution to Supporting Volunteers Award.
Peter works with a team of volunteers and their achievements have included the development of the new Victorian garden and wildflower meadow.
Lucy Cooke, volunteer projects co-ordinator at Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, which organised the awards ceremony, said: “In 2010-11, more than 2,000 volunteers contributed their time to the North East’s museums and galleries.
“This adds up to an astounding 80,000 hours of time which has been given to help support museums and galleries in the North East.”
