Lifeline for ‘doomed’ Durham leisure centre

A COMMUNITY centre threatened with closure has been thrown a lifeline.

A revised proposal to turn a loss-making council leisure centre into a community club venture is being recommended for approval.

If supported by Durham County Council’s Cabinet today, the new bid, led by Sherburn Village Parish Council, for the community’s leisure complex, would see closure-threatened centres remain open.

The recommendation to members will be made under “urgent business” and is necessary because in July cabinet agreed to close Sherburn, Ferryhill and Glenholme leisure centres.

Coun Bob Young, cabinet member for leisure, said: “We said we would listen to any new or revised bids and that is exactly what we have done.”
