Hymn writer’s return

Have your say

A HYMN writer who studied at Durham University is returning to the North East for a concert.

Keith Getty, who studied in the city in the early 1990s, is to play at a concert tomorrow.

Mr Getty says he fell in love with the North East when he first arrived in the area from his native Northern Ireland.

He and his wife Kristyn have written some of the most popular modern Christian hymn songs, including In Christ Alone, one of the top-selling hymns.

Speaking about his decision to study in Durham, Mr Getty said: “I had options to study elsewhere, but when I came for interview to Durham I fell in love with the city – the river, the town, and, in particular, the cathedral.

“I owe so much to Durham Cathedral’s organist James Lancelot.

“When I arrived in Durham I was very much a child of my Northern Ireland sub-culture.

“Being at the cathedral helped me appreciate the strength of hymns that proclaim the basis of the Christian faith.

“I have fused this with another great influence – traditional Irish folk.”

Tomorrow’s concert, entitled Keith and Kristyn Getty and Friends, starts at 7.30pm at The Sage, in Gateshead.

Tickets for the show are on sale and priced between £12 and £29.
