The owner of Crumb On In in Holmeside says deliveries have helped her small business survive during the difficult climate, especially as she wasn’t eligible for the Small Business Grant.

Gemma Sutherland’s business is based within Harrison & Brown Furniture store, meaning she pays rent, but not business rates, which discounted her from the Government’s grant scheme. However, she says deliveries, which she offers seven days a week, have kept Crumb On In afloat.

The business has had hundreds of orders for its afternoon tea boxes, priced £10 per person, and its ‘sexy boxes,’ priced £25, which are part cheese board and part meat board with extras on top.

Gemma said: “The demand has been amazing and it’s helped us survive, but it’s also been lovely to see people’s reactions when they receive the boxes. Often, people are buying them for their mams or nanas who they can’t see. I put cards in with the boxes as well, and people are so delighted when they receive them. It’s made us tear up a few times.”

With Harrison & Brown opening for appointment only from June 1, Gemma will be able to open her cafe for takeaway and collection, and will continue to offer deliveries also.

It comes as the Sunderland Echo is running our #SupportLocal campaign aimed at promoting the amazing things our local businesses are doing at this difficult time. For our guide to businesses offering takeout and delivery see here.
