We reported how Poetic License Distillery, based at the Roker Hotel, is using its resources to produce hand gels in line with World Health Organisation specifications.

High-alcohol content gels, which can help limit the spread of Covid-19, are in high demand during the pandemic, and the distillery has stepped in to produce an initial run of 2,000 100ml bottles using the ethanol from its distilling process.

As well as being available to buy through its online shop, including a free bottle with each purchase of gin, a number of bottles are being donated to good causes.

As part of the donations, the distillery has teamed up with North East drinks company, Artisan Drinks Company, to provide gift boxes for ICU staff at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

“We have not done this to make any profit, the cost is purely to cover our costs,” said Jonathan Graham, MD of Poetic License.

“This is about us being able to do something for the community.”

To boost the morale of staff on the ICU ward, they’ll be given kits including a miniature Poetic License gin, a bottle of hand rub and one of Artisan’s bespoke mixers.

“It’s just our way of being able to say thank you for all of the incredible work they are doing,” said Jonathan.

Steve Cooper, MD of The Artisan Drinks Company, said: “We were delighted to get the opportunity to contribute to the gift boxes and add our thanks for the amazing job the NHS staff are doing.”
