QUEEN of country Dolly Parton has penned tracks for a new musical which will have its North East premiere in Sunderland.

Following its first UK show in October, 9 to 5: The Musical will head to Wearside and will run from October 29 to November 3 at Sunderland Empire.

It’s based on the hit movie of the same name which follows three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist bigot of a boss.

Dolly said: “I am so excited that 9 to 5: The Musical is coming to Sunderland. I’m hoping you have as much fun watching it as I had writing the music for it.

“9 to 5: The Musical is perfect for anyone that’s ever wanted to string up their boss, which is almost all of us. So come join the fun.”

The show features Dolly’s original hit title song, 9 to 5, which won her an Oscar nomination and four Grammy Award nominations, along with her new Tony- and Grammy-nominated score.

It also features 18 original numbers from the iconic singer-songwriter, including songs from her last two albums Backwoods Barbie, Shine Like the Sun, Get Out and Stay Out and Let Love Grow.

Howard Panter, from Ambassador Theatre Group, which owns the Empire, said: “A hugely entertaining film has been turned into a musical rollercoaster of delight.

“Dolly Parton is a true global icon and her signature music will be an instant hit with musical theatre fans.

“This sharp, witty musical adventure is one of the most exciting new musicals to be hitting the UK stage.”
