A REGIONAL health campaign has been endorsed by a smoking soap star.
Coronation Street’s pregnant Tracy Barlow told her mum Deirdre to Take Seven Steps Out on an episode of the much-loved soap last week after seeing Deirdre smoking a sneaky cigarette at the back door.
The character Tracy is pregnant and she told her mum the smoke is harmful to her baby.
The campaign, by Fresh and Smokedree North West, launched last year and saw a nine per cent hike in the number of North East smokers who keep their homes smoke free.
Ailsa Rutter, Fresh director, said: “Just like all the mums and dads who have gone outside to smoke as a result of more awareness about the harm of smoke, Deidre Barlow and the makers of Coronation Street deserve a big well-done.
“We were surprised and delighted when this was featured, but it’s close to reality. We have heard stories of people asking friends to ‘take seven steps’ rather than tell them not to smoke in the house. Soap operas and films are an important influence.”
The Take 7 Steps Out campaign is part of the wider Smokefree Families programme that has so far trained more than 600 front-line health, council and children’s centre staff across the region to give advice to parents on the best ways to protect children from secondhand smoke.
