DISCERNING diners can now discover more of the finest flavours from the Far East here in the North East, after a leading restaurant unveiled its new Autumn/Winter menu.
The Tavistock Thai China restaurant at the Best Western Roker Hotel, Sunderland, has blended traditional Asian recipes and ingredients with modern cooking techniques to create its new range of Thai and Chinese-style cuisine - and has even brought in chefs from the Orient to ensure the dishes are truly authentic.
Diners new to Pan-Asian food and those who simply wish to enjoy a selection of dishes, can enjoy a warm introduction to the Roker Terrace restaurant’s new offerings by choosing from a carefully crafted menu of Asian tapas – small portions of traditional delicacies – and enjoying them as a starter or with several together as a main meal.
Tapas prices range from £3.95 for a grilled vegetable skewer served with a Wasabi dip, to £5.75 for a seafood satay of squid, scallops and prawn served with a chilli sauce.
There is also the opportunity share a platter of tapas with family and friends, with options priced at £9.95 for aromatic crispy duck or lamb, £11.50 for a classic mixed selection and a seafood selection for £12.95.
Other starter/light meal options include a range of soups such as Bangkok soup made from beef, ginger and bean shoots in a clear consommé-style broth priced at £3.95, salads with salmon, chicken or beef staring at £7.95 and mussels, cooked and served in a traditional Asian mussel pan with a choice of green coconut curry sauce; black bean and ginger; sweet and sour and white wine or coriander and coconut cream, for £8.95.
Main course options are available to suit almost any taste and cover a wide range of Asian cuisine including wok-based dishes such as stir fried chicken with cashew nuts (£12.95) and mixed seafood with chillies and basil leaves (£15.95), which can be served traditionally or on a sizzling platter with a choice of rice, noodles or stir fried vegetables.
The restaurant’s range of traditional Thai curries are priced between £11.95 and £13.95 and come with a choice of meat or fish and a selection of sauces with the hottest being the Jungle Curry - a blend of traditional herbs and spices.
Diners can also construct their own Chinese classic starting at £11.95 by putting together their pick of meat, fish and sauce with options including sweet and sour satay and black bean.
For a more unique taste, Tavistock Thai China also offers a selection of Pan-Asian and fusion dishes from Thailand and Asia, such as steamed sea bass with lime, coriander and spinach (£14.50) and Thai Surf and Turf –fillet steak medallions in teriyaki sauce with garlic and ginger wok fried king prawns (£19.95).
A selection of set banquets is also available for parties, groups and those who are simply struggling to choose, with prices starting at £16.95, along with an early evening menu, which offers three courses for £9.50 Tuesday to Saturday 5pm-7pm.
