The tastes of the North East and Italy are coming together at one of the region’s finest restaurants.
The Italian Farmhouse at West Rainton, County Durham, recently launched a new Autumn/Winter menu, specifically designed to bring together the best in Mediterranean and North Eastern produce to create a range of modern and traditional Italian cuisine.
Among the many new additions are a duo of seasonal starters - beetroot, feta and pear salad and a variety of lightly battered fried fish with garlic mayonnaise – an extended range of main courses and grills, including sustainable fish options such as a Prosciutto-wrapped fillet of seabass with gnocchi and clams and an array of meat-based dishes such as slow-cooked rabbit with black pudding and a puff pastry topping.
Those who prefer more traditional Italian food can also enjoy a selection of risottos, including the new pumpkin, pecan and fig version, as well as a variety of pizzas with toppings such as wild mushroom and spicy sausage and the vegetarian folded pizza of feta, sweet potato, spinach and caramelised red onion.
A wide range of pastas is also still available, each coming with a choice of spaghetti, pappardelle, orechiette or rigatoni.
Many of the ingredients being used to create these new dishes, including the olive oil, risotto rice, durum wheat pasta, cured meats, coffee beans and a selection of cheeses, are being imported directly from Italy to ensure authenticity, with the rest being sourced as close as possible to the restaurant’s West Rainton base, including all meat coming from four farms in the County Durham area and the white fish being landed at the North East coast.
While Italy is famed for its gelato ice cream, the Italian Farmhouse’s supplies are also sourced closer to home, with its existing and new Christmas Pudding varieties all being supplied by family-run Archer’s Jersey Dairy Ice Cream based just outside Darlington.
These ice creams form part of the restaurant’s newly extended desserts menu, which now also includes a rich chestnut and chocolate infused set mousse, pear tarte tatin and honey flavoured pannacotta.
Main menu prices at the Italian Farmhouse start at £3.95 for a starter, £5.95 for a main course and £4.05 for a dessert.
A happy hour menu also runs from noon until 2pm and again from 5pm-6.45pm Monday to Saturday and from 5pm-6pm Sunday, with a selection of starters, main courses, desserts and drinks being sold at a specially reduced rate.
Other affordable offers available throughout the week include a three course set menu with half a bottle of house wine for £14.50 per person Sunday to Friday evenings and the restaurant’s 666 deal, which runs from Monday to Saturday lunchtime and Sunday to Friday until 6pm.
This includes two courses, chosen from a selection of six starters, pizzas and pastas for £6.66 per person, with coffee also available for just 66p.
A separate Sunday lunch menu is also served every week, priced at £9.35 for two courses or £11.50 for three.
