11 photos from the year Sunderland was blitzed by the Luftwaffe - including two remarkable tales of survival

German bombers wreaked havoc on Sunderland 80 years ago this month – but there was a remarkable tale of survival amid it all.

These 11 photos from 1941 show the damage left by the Luftwaffe as they blitzed Wearside.

And among the collection are two pictures showing a bomb site from which an 18-month-old child was rescued alive.

The infant was in its cot when the bomb hit and was somehow still alive when rescuers reached the youngster around ten hours later in February 1941.

It is not the only tale of survival against the odds from Wearside that year.

Another family was taking cover in their Anderson shelter when a German bomb hit and they also got out alive.
