After a statue of slave trader Edward Colston was torn down by protesters in Bristol, attention has been turned to statues and monuments across the UK and questions asked about who they honour.
We’ve looked at 12 statues and monuments in and around Sunderland to see who or what they honour.
5. Sunderland's great naval hero
In Mowbray Park this statue depicts Navy Sailor Jack Crawford who was known for his heroics at the 1797 Battle of Camperdown when he climbed the mast to raise a flag to refuse surrender despite heavy gunfire. He lived until 1831. Photo: Sunderland Echo
6. Hetton's glorious mining heritage

7. Tommy
Another representation of the larger population, the Tommy statue which was unveiled on 2014 in Seaham represents every ordinary soldier in every conflict. Photo: Sunderland Echo
8. Henry Havelock, Sunderland's great military leader
Havelock, who also has a statue in Trafalgar Square, stands at the south end of Mowbray Park. He was a British Empire solider renowned for his bravery in battle. He died during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. Photo: Sunderland Echo
