Jet2, EasyJet, British Airways and Ryanair have cancelled flights to Italy – following the escalating crisis of the coronavirus outbreak in Italy.

Hundreds of flights between the UK and Italy have been cancelled Jet2 and British Airways flights to Italy have been cancelled with immediate effect from today, while Ryanair said no flights will serve the country from Saturday.

EasyJet has also cancelled dozens of its Italian flights.

The decision from the travel companies comes after the Italian government announced that it was extending its emergency measures to cover nationwide – following an outbreak of the virus in the Northern Italy in the last few weeks.

Jet2 flies from Newcastle Airport to Pisa and Rome Fiumicino airport.

Flights have been cancelled until April, 26 – a spokesman for Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “We always follow the travel advice of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who are currently advising against all but essential travel to Italy. As such, we have cancelled all flights to Italy.”

"We are contacting customers who are due to travel to Italy to advise them of their options, and we are also contacting customers who are currently in Italy, to arrange to fly them back to the UK. The health and safety of our customers is always our number one priority.”Italy has the largest number of recorded coronavirus cases outside of China – with almost 10,000 confirmed cases. The decision to cancel flights to the country follows that of British Airways, who also announced that all its flights to and from Italy were cancelled.

Ryanair has said passengers who need to fly home can switch to one of its flights which are operating up to and including Friday – with the airline no longer serving flights to Italy from Saturday.

An airline spokesman said: "The situation is changing on a daily basis, and all passengers on flights affected by travel bans or cancellations are receiving emails and are being offered flight transfers, full refunds or travel credits. Ryanair apologises sincerely to all customers for these schedule disruptions, which are caused by national government restrictions and the latest decision of the Italian government to lock down the entire country to combat the Covid-19 virus."

Low cost carrier Norwegian has cancelled around 3,000 flights between mid-March and mid-June across all its routes due to the coronavirus and Virgin Atlantic have admitted that it’s flying planes are “almost empty”.

The first case of the virus in Sunderland was diagnosed yesterday, with the patient currently being treated at South Tyneside District Hospital.

After the first confirmed case, health bosses are calling for calm in the region, saying that the wider risk “remains low”.
