Dr Mudassar Baig, who works as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Sunderland Royal Hospital, has been nominated for a Best of Health Award.

It came from the wife of a Wearside man who needed a valve replacement.

She said: “The operation was a success and he was discharged into the care of Dr Baig at Sunderland.

“The problem he had was the medication he had to take after the operation, he didn't take to kindly to it.

“But with Dr Baig's patience and dedication my husband is now doing very well. Dr Baig was very understanding but also practical and is is very easy to get along with so thanks to him things are back to normal for my husband.”

Dr Baig said he was ‘over the moon’ with his nomination.

He has been in the role at Sunderland for more than four years and said: “During this time I have been able to help patients with heart attacks, as well as those with other heart conditions, through procedures like stent placement (Coronary Angioplasty) to open the blocked arteries, hopefully making a difference in their life journey.”

He added: “It is touching to think that someone has taken the time to say thank you in such a public way and I am very grateful to the person who has nominated me. Patient feedback is so important and this example is a real boost which encourages me to continue what I’m doing for the benefit of my patients.”
