The areas in and around Sunderland with the highest and lowest Covid rates ahead of Boris Johnson's lockdown roadmap announcement

Ahead of Boris Johnson’s announcement on the roadmap to ease lockdown, we take a look at the areas in and around Sunderland which has the highest and lowest Covid rates.

After almost 7 weeks of the national lockdown, Sunderland still has the highest infection rate compared to its LA7 neighbours – although the number of positive Covid cases are continuing to fall.

In the seven days up to February 16, Sunderland recorded 535 positive cases compared to 1,528 in the seven days up to January 5 – the day lockdown rules came into force.

As the Prime Minister set to outline the roadmap to easing lockdown today (Monday, February 22), we reveal which areas have the highest and lowest Covid rates in the seven days up to Tuesday, February 16.

The case rate takes into account the number of people living in each area compared to the number of people who have tested positive for the virus and are measured by 100,000 people.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). Pictures are for illustrative purposes only.
