Hudson Road Primary in Hendon launched the project as its team continue to look after the youngsters of key workers and those identified as in need of support by the Government.

It has taken in supplies of fresh food and cupboard staples for parents of its pupils to keep their cupboards and fridges stocked, with an extra appeal sent out for craft supplies to help keep children busy during the time when they are unable to play with their friends or enjoy days out.

The supplies have been gathered up after the idea was suggested by school governor Father Andrew Collins-Jones, of St Ignatius the Martyr Church, with Sunderland AFC legend Gary Bennett lending a hand to collect and deliver.

It has been supported by Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen, which turned to its suppliers and contacts to help source items, with supermarkets and the public donating a large amount of goods.

Its own nightly meal sessions were put on hold as it does not want to encourage people to be out and about during the lockdown, but its volunteers are continuing to help those in need via a delivery service.

Headteacher Cathy Westgate said: “Fr Andrew suggested we offer some help at this difficult time because a lot of families have lost their jobs and it’s really hard for anybody.

“A lot of places have closed or people have recently been employed and aren’t on benefits.

People are living in really difficult circumstances and we think this is just the tip of the iceberg and we just wanted to do something to help.
